Saints, Sinners and South Carolina

Yep – Belle said the M word.  Because if you don’t think that’s what happened in South Carolina, you’re crazy.   Romney can continue to act like his religion isn’t an issue all he wants — but the Tea Party and Evangelical Right aren’t going to forget his Mormon roots when they go to the polls.   I actually don’t think the loss in South Carolina is really as deadly to Romney as media wants to portray it to be.  He knew he would lose a few early, southern, Evangelical states – and this was one of them.

The one I feel sorry for is Santorum.  He’s the real loser in this state.  No one expected him to pick up New Hampshire – with them booing him and unimpressed with his platform of gay sex and abortion talk — but South Carolina should have eaten it up like biscuits and gravy!  He not only is a life-long catholic – he has one wife and seven kids to prove it.

However the prize went to Newt – a “new catholic” with questionable family values, stacks of ethics violations, the racial sensitivity and class sensitivity of a brick, and nothing to offer the people of South Carolina but a lot of hot air (having lived through hurricane Irene – I can tell you they already have enough of that).

Now its off to wild and whacky Florida – where Newt will seem sane, Romney will appear over-dressed, Santorum will revive his “I’m the real conservative values guy who hates gays but LOOOVES old people” road show, and Ron Paul will scandalize half the state by showing up.

  1. Yeah, it’s really not that odd an outcome if you realize the evangelical hatred of Mormonism is alive and well in many parts of the country.

    • That’s so crazy to me! Catholicism isn’t really any more in-line with Conservative protestantism (evangelicals) than Mormonism is — they just have fancier hats. And it’s sad that this far along in time our country is STILL being defined by religious intolerance. This country needs to grow up!

      • Catholics hats? Maybe, but that’s only the blessed few. Every Mormon comes equipped with magic underwear. Or do Catholics have that, too?

It’s REALLY getting hard to keep track of the crazy anymore.

  2. Wow. I saw Alexandra Pelosi on Real Time. On her latest documentary clips, I saw that the Mormon thing is a deal breaker for a lot of people. Hmm. I wonder how Floridians will vote.
