It’s the Right Question that Counts
There is a certain narcissism in the way we tend to choose to vote. We pick the candidate who we think reflects our views the most. For some – it’s a stance on abortion that matches our own, for others it is an economic policy that will favor us or our company, and for others it is a commitment to something we hold dear (wildlife, global security, oil – whatever). However, if we were able to look at candidates based on what is best for all people – not just what matches our feelings — we would perhaps be better off as a country.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a person who was able and willing to put the needs of a great many ahead of his own safety and comfort. He wrote, marched, preached and pushed to see policy enacted to ensure the rights of many over the privilege of a few. We shouldn’t just wish for a leader like him today – we should become selfless examples of leadership like him today.
This holiday – take a moment from your three day weekend to remember and learn from the legacy of a man who had a vision for our nation and a dream worth keeping.
