In Someone We Trust…

As you might guess, I’m not a fan of Tebowing or Congress right now – probably because I find their actions very much the same.

Tebowing comes from assuming the posture of bending one knee with your head down – similar to football player Tim Tebow who does this before games, major plays, etc.  He claims it is just to show his relationship with God whom he believes cares about the outcome of football games.  My problem is – that when you claim to do something in the name of God – then people should  see God.  But they don’t. Who they see is Tim Tebow.  Notice – they don’t call it “Godding” or even by its previous name – “Praying” – they calling it Tebowing – and it’s become an internet meme of the highest order – hundreds of people posting pictures of themselves in the Tebow pose – creating a spectacle, but certainly not faith.

The House of Representatives – led by John Boehner and Eric Cantor are guilty of the same stunt making nonsense – only the stakes are much higher.  They attached unthinkable riders to the payroll tax cut, then refused to vote on a bipartisan Senate compromise to keep the cut in effect (saving the tax payers a lot of money) while they worked out the issues.  They are openly stalling the vote because they want everyone in their little power group to see they are opposing the President.  They don’t care about what happens to the middle class who will have their taxes raised by $1,000 and they don’t care who notices they are not working for “we the people” anymore.  They are creating a spectacle, but certainly not a just government.

Personally, a God who allows children to starve to death and criminals to go free without consequence but intervenes in football games is not the kind of God I want to believe in.  The politician who allows the middle class to suffer just to set up a slimy little power play is not the kind of person I want to be in office.  People will get bored with Tebow in due time and find another side-show to follow. Hopefully they will tire of politicians playing games with our lives and next November find someone else to take their jobs!

  1. I couldn’t have said any of that any better. We are living in a time of spectacle rather than substance – in religion and in politics. The Tebow thing I find relatively harmless. This Republican standoff and pandering thing – it’s despicable behavior. Let’s pray for long memories in 2012 and hope for some significant disruption in the House.

    • The House stalemate is the most disgusting kind of act — simply to make sure the Tea Party power backers are watching and taking note – in the meantime their actions have real consequences for all of us. I am very much in favor of a clean sweep next November — get every one of them out and start again.

  2. Amen

  3. I find the Tebow think as harmless, but I love you take since you put it in a way that I hadn’t thought about. Then again, even if he was doing his thing, would it be getting as much publicity if the Broncos had not been winning?

As for Congress … simply pathetic – and I am losing hope.

    • And more importantly – do the Broncos really want the country to know it takes a miracle from God for them to field a winning team? :)

Congress is pathetic. I have always found “clean slate-ers” (“vote em all out” folks who always vote against an incumbent) – to be extreme — but lately – I’ve understood their logic.
